On Noticing the Small Things

There are days that feel too full to examine.

The work is ordinary.
The responsibilities familiar.
Nothing dramatic happens.

And yet, when I slow down enough to pay attention, I begin to see how easily I overlook what God calls significant.

A small kindness.
A quiet obedience.
A moment of restraint instead of reaction.

None of these announce themselves.

They are easily dismissed — even by me.

But Scripture says, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.” (Matthew 10:29)

If a sparrow does not fall unnoticed, then neither does a small act of faithfulness.

The kingdom of God does not grow only in grand gestures.
It grows in hidden places.

Sometimes I think meeting with God must be something large to matter — long, uninterrupted, impressive in its consistency.

But He does not measure as I measure.

He sees.

He remembers.

He values what I am tempted to call small.

HALF A PENNY

If half a penny disappeared,
Would I even care?
A sparrow falling to the ground
Never leaves His care.

Insignificant? We are not.
We're always seen by Him.
Greatly beloved and not forgot,
Trust wells up within.

Father, forgive me for the days
I think meeting You
Insignificant compared with
All I have to do.

There is a quiet comfort in this.

God is not waiting for the impressive offering.
He is present in the small one.

The unnoticed prayer.
The brief turning of the heart.
The moment of repentance that no one else sees.

Nothing given to Him is wasted.

And perhaps the discipline of reflection is simply this:

To notice what He has been noticing all along.
